An itchy scalp can quickly become a source of significant daily discomfort. This phenomenon can be caused by many different factors. To better soothe it, it’s therefore important to understand its origin. Here are the main causes.
Is your scalp itchy? This unpleasant sensation can occur at any time of day, distracting you from your tasks and even disrupting your daily routine. But know that this is a very common phenomenon that can be caused by many factors.
Skin diseases: why is my scalp itchy?
Seborrheic dermatitis
In an interview with Shape magazine , American dermatologist Dr. Anna Chacon identified several factors that can cause an itchy scalp. She first mentioned one of the most common causes of scalp itchiness: seborrheic dermatitis , an inflammatory skin condition characterized by the appearance of red patches covered with scales and dandruff. This condition is caused by the production of sebum, which promotes the abnormal proliferation of yeasts naturally present on the skin and scalp. This results in an inflammatory reaction, redness, and an accelerated turnover of scalp and skin cells.
Psoriasis
Other factors are less common but also cause scalp itching, including psoriasis . This is an autoimmune disease that causes red patches and scales.
