“You will sit down with your boys right now,” I told him.
“You will explain to them exactly why you left us twenty years ago.”
Ethan took a fearful step back.
“I do not know how to do that,” he said.
“I cannot face them after all this time.”
“Then you start with the simple truth,” I ordered.
He stared down at his worn shoes.
“They will hate me forever,” he cried softly.
“I cannot look into their faces.”
“They cannot look into yours either,” I reminded him.
“But they will hear every single word you say.”
Suddenly, a clear voice echoed from the hallway behind me.
“Let him come in, Mom,” Noah called out.
I turned around in complete shock.
Noah and Lucas stood in the dim corridor.
Their heightened hearing picked up our entire conversation on the porch.
Ethan froze like a statue.
“They know I am here,” he whispered.
“Yes,” I said.
“They heard everything, so you have absolutely nowhere to hide.”
Noah walked closer, tapping his white cane against the wooden floor.
“We knew it was you the moment you spoke,” Noah said.
“We recognized your voice from the old home videos.”
“Come out to the patio,” Lucas added from the back door.
“We want to hear this explanation.”
I stepped aside and pointed toward the backyard.
“Go on,” I told Ethan.
He walked past me, shaking uncontrollably.
We moved slowly through the house and approached the glass back doors.
The cheerful party music stopped completely.
The boys sat waiting at the long wooden table.
“I am so sorry,” Ethan choked out from the doorway.
“Tell them exactly why you left,” I demanded.
“I was completely selfish,” Ethan confessed to his sons.
“I was terrified.”
Tears rolled down his dirty, pale cheeks.
“I was afraid your lives would be far too difficult.”
Noah tilted his head toward the sound of his father’s voice.
“So you just ran away from us?” Noah asked.
“Yes,” Ethan answered honestly.
“I ran away like a miserable coward.”
Lucas tightly gripped the edge of the table.
“Your mother stayed,” Ethan continued loudly.
“She gave you absolutely everything you needed.”
He let out a painful, ugly sob.
“I gave you nothing.”
“I abandoned my own family.”
I watched my ex-husband tremble.
He finally stopped hiding behind his excuses.
Ethan stepped fully onto the patio to face the sons he abandoned, but I did not know if they would forgive him or turn him away forever.
“I left because I was a selfish coward,” Ethan said.
“I feared your lives would be too difficult.”
“I panicked and ran away from my family.”
“Your mother stayed and gave you absolutely everything.”
“I gave you nothing but pain,” he added.
“I failed both of you in the worst possible way.”
Lucas turned toward the sound of Ethan’s voice.
“We never needed perfect eyes,” Lucas said softly.
“We only needed a loving father.”
“We needed someone who stayed through the hard times.”
Ethan cried loudly, hiding his face in his hands.
“I was so incredibly foolish,” Ethan sobbed.
“I lost the best part of my life.”
I stepped forward and looked down at my former husband.
“You could sleep in the guest room tonight,” I said.
“Tomorrow, we would find you a steady job and your own place.”
“I promised I would help you stand up again.”
“But I refused to carry your life for you,” I stated.
“I expected nothing less,” Ethan replied.
“I accepted your terms with gratitude.”
Months passed, and Ethan visited consistently. He worked hard and earned his own small apartment. One morning, he stopped by our house.
“Dad, did you have some free time today?” Lucas asked.
“I had the whole morning off,” Ethan replied.
“Could you drive us to the diner for breakfast?” Lucas asked.
“I would love that,” Ethan said.

“I would be absolutely honored to drive my sons.”
I watched them walk out to the car together. I knew our fractured past finally healed into a whole family.
